After the war, government personnel came to Brackenhurst while awaiting the departure of ships sailing back to England. Missionary friends also began coming for periods of rest and recuperation. On one occasion, a missionary woman was staying in a tiny, round cottage, now named “Boma,” in order to recuperate from ‘consumption’ (tuberculosis). The windows and doors were left open to allow fresh air to pass through. One evening, after retiring, the guest felt the presence of something in the room. She saw a long tail sliding through the door and then felt something raising the mattress from below her bed as it passed beneath. Startled, she sat up just in time to see a leopard stalking out of the doorway!
